D's off to great start despite losing first game

Boston, MA 10/5/09 - The great D-Minus machine was in pure defense mode last night, in the 0-1 loss to the Boston Lobsters. New players LW Peter Feeney (-17) and C Ed Kelley (-10) each had strong debuts for D-Minus. Old hand LW Dave Simon (-15) was on board as well, filling in on left wing as a substitute.

Although most of the game took place in the wrong end of the rink, the home team's heads-up defensive play frustrated the somewhat talented Lobsters offense until late in the 3rd period. After D-Minus goaltender Mark Perry made an impressive pad save off of a shot by #78 Sean Macamaux of the Lobsters, the puck squirted out through the scrum in front of the net. #15 Carl Fisher was there, and flipped the puck up through the screen of bodies for the game's only goal. Said Perry after the game, "Everyone was crowded to the right side of the goal and then the puck spit out to a guy all by himself on my left. Before shooting, he hesitated to the point where I got a good look at him: mustache, 40ish, fair skin, rather feminine nose. Then he zinged one over my shoulder. It's rough to not come up with a big save in that situation." He added, "Letting that goal in was like peeing in my pants at prom. Everyone could see it, but only I could feel it." The D's tried to even it up with a strong finish, but were unable to answer back.

C Bill Ryan (-3) had a golden opportunity in the 2nd on a classic breakaway, pulling the Lobsters goalie out of the crease and creating a huge opening. Unfortunately the shot bounced off of the left goalpost and the effort was squashed like a beer can. When he was interviewed after the game, this is what he had to say: "I was just trying to get to the puck before their goalie, but I guess I am faster in my mind then I am on my skates. I actually beat the goalie to the puck but he took me out and the shot went wide. I think it was a great team effort and everyone played well, especially Mark who made too many awesome saves." For the record, Bill is faster on his skates than many players are in their own minds.

This game was a grind from start to finish. Both defenses were strong, and effective at disrupting plays and clearing the puck out of the zone. The Offense kept up the pressure consistently until the end, but scoring opportunities were elusive.

"Overall, the level of intensity was there, and even though we only had 2 lines, we didn't get tired." said D Don Rhodes (-8). "The puck was in our end a lot but we made a fantastic team effort to intimidate them into coughing it up, which they repeatedly did. This was a really well-played game that either team deserved to win, they just got lucky first."

"Monday evening's game was a late affair to say the least. What with the dark roads, the scary urban environment, and the slippery ice." remarked Captain Peter Hack (-12). "Against all expectations and common reason, the D-Minus crew almost squeaked another tie. Sadly all efforts were for naught as we lost it with 6 minutes remaining in the third period. We played our hearts out and except for our lack of skill, talent, and mental capacity we were once again defeated."

Practice with the Predators

I contacted Brian Tilton of the Predators, who approached us after playoff game one and offerred to split a practice ice. He pointed out how unavailable ice time is...I checked out Boch Ice Area (aka Dedham where we play) and they are booked solid all winter. So the problem is no longer paying for the ice or finding another team to play, it's finding ice in the first place.
Brian mentioned that he'll call Jim Roche Arena (on VFW Parkway) and see if they have time. I checked their website and saw a whole heaping helping of nothing.

If anybody is aware of a rink that isn't all booked up forever, please post it here. Frozen ponds are good too.
